Decorated Candles Class March 2, 2002

(Light My Fire with Jenmist)

Instruction Page

instr1.jpg (31132 bytes) Step 1: Stamp image on tissue paper, I used cheap white tissue paper.  Use a pigment ink (Brilliance used in examples).  Emboss with clear EP.
instr2.jpg (39249 bytes) Step 2: Paint the image with Lumiere paints, you need a very light touch here, if you have too much paint on the brush you may overlay the embossed lines.  I use the smallest brush I have (usually one of the green handled ones from Michaels that go on sale for $1.00).  You can also flip over the tissue and paint from the back for slightly subdued colors and clearer embossed lines.  See the examples for this.

instr3.jpg (30323 bytes) Step 3: Cut out the image and lay over the candle and determine the placement of the image.  Flip up one side of the image and heat the candle with your heat gun – as soon as it gets shiny stop the heat – do not hold the gun too closely and remember it is easy to heat again so do not over heat.  Flip image back down and press to adhere.  Continue this until the entire image is fixed on the candle.  Apply the heat gun around the edges to seal.  Note: Do not attempt to heat the entire candle area before attaching the image as the image will tend to stretch and/or wrinkle when you press it into the hot wax and this way also keeps your planned image placement set.

Step 4: After the candle is cooled you can begin to decorate.  Here is the procedure I used:

I ran a thin line of bead glue all around the edge of the image.

Next I attached fiber/cord over that glue.

Leave the fiber long enough to knot or crisscross around to the back of the candle.

Let this dry completely.

Glue on charms or sequins or flat beads.

You can also add ribbon or fiber tied to top or bottom of candle with beads tied onto the fiber.

You could stamp smaller images or sayings onto tissue and attach those to the candle in the same way you did your main image.
